The Jets will have the opportunity Thursday night to add a potential impact player to their roster and Sports Illustrated’s Chris Burke believes that could be LSU S Jamal Adams.
“Looking at it, that’s kind of the dream scenario unless you want to trade down or if you’re really in love with a quarterback there,” Burke said. “I think Jamal Adams being at six would be ideal for the Jets because he fits what you want in a safety in the modern NFL.
“He’s a guy that can play in the box, he can cover in the slot, match up with a tight end or drop him deep. I don’t know that he’s necessarily a single-high safety on a regular basis, but I think he can handle that from time to time especially if you’re playing some zone coverage or two deep, he can in that formation.”
The Jets, with their sixth pick of the 2017 NFL Draft tonight, stayed put rather than trading down and selected LSU safety Jamal Adams, called by some draft analysts “the best prospect in the draft.”
It is the ninth time in the last eight drafts that the Jets have selected a defensive player in the first round.
“We felt very fortunate that Adams fell to us at that spot,” general manager Mike Maccagnan said shortly after the pick was made. “We feel he’s a very good player and he’ll be a great addition to the Jets not only as a player on the field but what he brings from an intangible standpoint off the field.”

Similar to coaches and NFL Draft pundits throughout the league, The Advocate’s Scott Rabalais gave Jets first-round draft pick Jamal Adams jersey authentic a near peerless review.
“He could do it all,” Rabalais said. “He has good closing speed. He had five interceptions and two recovered fumbles the last two years at LSU, so he has a nose for the ball. He can jump the route and anticipate very well. He baits quarterbacks into throwing the ball where he’d like them to, which gives him a chance to get the ball.
“Supporting the run, he has the size to take on a running back who breaks through the initial containment or a tight end coming over the middle. There’s not a lot he can’t do except for maybe that blazing speed to go deep all the time, but he did run a 4.33 40-yard dash at his pro day.”
In Adams’ game, Rabalais sees shades of former Pro Bowl safety Laron Landry, another LSU product who was coincidentally selected No. 6 overall in the 2007 NFL Draft.
The Jets clearly went best-player-available throughout the class, and they didn’t reach. They stuck to their board, and I can respect that.
Jamal Adams is simply a fantastic player and value at No. 6 overall, and Marcus Maye at the top of the second round is right where I thought he’d go. ArDarius Stewart, Chad Hansen and Jordan Leggett all should help the passing game — and whoever’s throwing them the ball. Leggett, in particular, could be a starter when the season begins.
Jamal Adams is an excellent, hard-nosed stud who presents great leadership qualities. He was the best player available, and they made the right call.

The Jets added nine players to their roster on Draft weekend, kicking things off with the selection of one of the top prospects in the nation, safety Jamal Adams. The Green & White were slated to have seven picks, but general manager Mike Maccagnan executed five trades, resulting in two extra 2017 picks and the Cowboys’ fifth-round choice in 2018.
After meeting with Sheldon Richardson about the defensive lineman’s pregame video posted on Rontez Miles’ Snapchat account, Jets HC Todd Bowles was ready to turn the page on Tuesday.
“It’s not a recurring thing. Again, we don’t condone what he did,” he reiterated. “He didn’t go out and rob a bank. He didn’t shoot anybody. He said two foul words on Snapchat. In the day of Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, anything you say in the line of business we are in is detrimental to the team.
At the NFL Combine, Hansen ran a 4.53-second 40 and a 4.13 in the 20 shuttle, had a 35.0″ vertical jump and a 9’11” broad jump. Despite the average testing, he has, according to NFL.com, “shown a good combination of size and speed for the perimeter with an ability to climb over the top of cornerbacks and win the deep ball.”
Hansen is the sixth Cal player drafted by the Jets all-time, the first since QB Troy Taylor arrived in the 1990 draft, and the second Cal WR after Wesley Walker was drafted in the second round (33rd overall in the 1977) and went on to a Ring of Honor career in green and white.
