The Jets have signed undrafted free agent running back Romar Morris and have waived tight end Jerome Cunningham.
Morris, one of the 22 tryout players at the Jets’ recent rookie minicamp, is a 5’9″, 190-pound back out of North Carolina. He played in 50 games with 13 starts over his four seasons with the Tar Heels. For his career he had 213 carries for 1,024 yards (4.8 yards/carry) and 12 touchdowns and added 54 receptions for 499 yards (9.2 yards/catch) and two TDs.
As a redshirt senior, he saw his touches reduced (10 carries, nine receptions) so he focused on special teams, an area he said he enjoys and in which he saw an opportunity for himself in the pros.
Josh Martin has bounced around quite a bit in his NFL career, so he began his first full season with the Jets on a mission. The 25-year-old Martin, a backup linebacker who led the Jets with 14 special teams stops in 2016, carried a chip on his shoulder and he became a standout performer along the way.
“I feel like I had something to prove. I still feel like I have something to prove,” he said. “When you come off a year like I had my third year, where you weren’t really with the team for an extended period of time, there’s always people that doubt you. You can feel it in the building. They don’t quite know what I’m capable of. Show them what I’m about, that’s kind of how I approached this season.”
Before free agency began, the 25-year-old expressed his desire to stay with the Jets.
“I’ve never been in this situation before. I’m going to travel a little bit and take some time off the next few weeks,” he said in January. “Then I’ll get back to work and hopefully we can reach an agreement. I like it here. I like the foundation we’ve been able to establish. I want to lead that base now.”

The Columbia product started out as an undrafted free agent with Kansas City in 2013, playing two seasons with the Chiefs. He opened the 2015 campaign with the Buccaneers and then was waived/injured by the Bucs before joining the Colts practice squad. In November of 2015, the Jets signed Martin off the Indianapolis practice squad.
“I feel like there are a lot of good guys on the team,” said the veteran outside linebacker. “Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan are going into their third year and it’s good to be with a team that’s establishing those relationships and working through some of the hardships. Obviously we didn’t have the best season, but it’s a character season. That’s kind of how I saw it and I didn’t want to walk away from a challenge. I’m looking forward to helping win some games and Romar Morris jersey cheap being a part of Jets Nation.”
The hiring of outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene was another factor in keeping Martin in green and white. Martin has heard great things about his new position coach from former teammates that learned under Greene’s tutelage including Chiefs LB Frank Zombo. Known for his fiery and upbeat personality, Greene’s reputation speaks for itself.
Rookie wide receiver Charone Peake is starting to emerge at Jets Training Camp.
It began in practice when Peake made a sensational one-handed grab down the sideline on a pass from QB Bryce Petty. It’s also carried over into game action. In the Jets’ 17-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Peake had a 17-yard touchdown catch from QB Geno Smith and he totaled four receptions for 45 yards in his first professional game.
